The inventor of Tiger Balm
The story begins in the nineteenth century when a Chinese herbalist, called Aw Chu Kin, works at the court of the Emperor of China. Herbalists of the court use a soothing cream, made from plants, to relieve the suffering of emperors from various aches and pains. In the late 1870s, Aw Chu Kin left China and moved to Yangon capital of Burma. He opens a traditional medicine shop named "Eng Aun Tong". Aw Chu Kin creates a composition based on essential oils and old formulas. He manufactures and sells highly effective special ointment to relieve aches and pains. The reputation of the product expands very fast. Tiger Balm is at the beginnings of his birth. In 1908, Aw Chu Kin dies.
The birth of the Tiger Balm ® brand
After the death of Aw Chu Kin, in 1908, his two sons inherit the traditional medicine shop "Eng Aun Tong". The two heirs Aw Boon Haw and Aw Boon Par took the business on hand again. Their names mean "sweet tiger" and "soft leopard". They create brand Tiger Balm ®. Aw Boon Haw, marketing genius, gives the name of the brand. In 1926, they transfer the company from Yangon to Singapore. Tiger Balm ® Company markets successfully its ointment in neighboring countries such as Malaysia, Hong Kong, the Kingdom of Siam (Thailand) and China.
